Airports and border police are facing a tremendous challenge:
Until 2020, the number of airport travelers will increase by at least 25 percent. Airport space, however, is very restricted and costly. At the same time, security efforts need to be enhanced while border police staff remains limited.

L-1 has developed a solution that helps airports, border police and travelers to cope with these changes: The ABC Gate™.

L-1’s ABC Gate™ enables the swift and secure automated border crossing by ensuring all international safety standards. The solution contains of a self-service kiosk system that comfortably guides the user through the border crossing procedure.
First, the traveler has to put his or her ePassport on a document reader. Then the first door opens, the traveler enters the kiosk and his or her face is registered by an integrated camera within fractions of a second. The taken image is biometrically matched against the image from the ePassport and when the passport procedure check was successfully completed, the second door swings open and the traveler has easily crossed the border.

In the background, the border police supervises the automated passport check. While the authenticity of the ePassport is checked by the integrated passport reader, the document data is matched against a search list. Innumerable travelers can easily pass the border while no personal interaction is required – and the border police officers can solely concentrate on the critical ones.
